Teaching Modifier Cues by the book.....

Time for us to get out Volume 2 for some refresher work with the Comebefores and then to get serious about Left and Right.  We have reached a plateau at Step 1 in Level 4 Communication.  So this is a good time to go back and refresh both teacher and student.

First, a thorough Review, Remind, Reteach of the Comebefores.  And to get it on Flip.

Comebefores:

Levels 1 - 4: Target, Jump, Distance, Retrieve
Focus Level 2 Step 5:  Using Focus to show that the dog is In the Game
Focus Level 3 Step 5:  Using Focus to show that the dog is In the Game
Focus Level 4:  Look

Modifier Cues:  Left and Right

Focus Level 4:  Look
  • Step 1 Comeafter:  teaching Lily to communicate
    • ask her to tell you that she knows what happens next
    • when she does, give her permission to do it
    • this behavior is done facing away from me
Communication: Level 4

  • Step 1: dog nose targets your hands to left and right on cue
    • facing toward you
    • facing away from you
  • Step 2:  paw target your foot
    • (she had to nose target my foot in L1 Target)
    • someone else's feet
  • Step 3: paw target objects on floor
    • larger objects; smaller object
    • facing away from me
    • different locations

The Paw Touch Board

Cathy showed me some different ways to utilize the Paw Touch Board.  I had made the board when teaching Lily to press objects with her paw.  Cathy used it to practice shaping with Rooster.

So I am now going to use it at a shaping exercise....with many variations.

#1
Using the clicker to direct Lily to different objects

#2
Have Lily interact with a single object while repositioning the board itself

#3
Select a single object and introduce distance

#4
Repeat the above exercises with the board placed on an angle
